Children’s Equipment
Before buying equipment for your child you might like to contact the statutory services to see if they can provide what is required. It is important in many cases for parents to seek advice before they buy equipment to ensure it is appropriate. An assessment is usually needed to ensure the correct equipment is provided.
Assessments for equipment are carried out by paediatric occupational therapists (OTs) specialising in helping children to maximise their independence and manage daily living tasks as easily as possible. The assessment may result in the provision of specialised equipment and other services. There may be a delay between contacting someone for an assessment and getting one.
Everyone is entitled to a community care assessment, including carers. To arrange an assessment contact your local social services department.
You may also be able to get equipment on short term or long term loan via the NHS. Your doctor or health visitor can advise you and put you in touch with the appropriate hospital OT, physiotherapist or speech & language therapist who can assist you and your child.
The Disabled Living Foundation has comprehensive factsheets on Children’s equipment.
The Children’s Information Service provides a general information and advice service to parents in Surrey.
