Disability Equipment Service

Household Items

You may be eligible to receive equipment to help you cope at home. Contact your local Social Services department and ask for an assessment from a Community Occupational Therapist. (The criteria for providing assessments and equipment varies from area to area.)

Disabled Living Foundation factsheets provide advice on choosing the right type of equipment, and on insurance.

If you have difficulty managing everyday tasks you may be eligible for either Disabled Living Allowance (DLA) – Care Component (for those under 65) or for older people Attendance Allowance.

Home Improvement Agencies, sometimes called Staying Put or Care & Repair, may be able to help with fitting adaptions and helping you to remain in your home. If you need major adaptations you can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant.

Local charities may also help with the cost of buying equipment. There are also a range of useful directories and web-based resources dealing with sources of money for individuals in need.

You may be able to hire equipment from your local Red Cross if you only need equipment for a short period of time.

Alternative solutions may include home care services & other support services.

If you have an accessible or adapted property to sell or let try the Accessible Property Register or Mobility Friendly Homes.
