Mobility Equipment

You may be eligible to receive an NHS wheelchair. Simply ask your GP for a referral to the Wheelchair Assessment Service, who can provide an appropriate chair or give you a voucher to put towards purchasing a more expensive model.

Disabled Living Foundation factsheets provide advice on choosing the right type of equipment, and on insurance.

Alternatively you could contact your nearest Mobility Centre to arrange an assessment for a scooter or buggy.

If you have mobility difficulties and are aged under 65 you may be eligible for Disabled Living Allowance (DLA)– Mobility Component. This benefit can be used to help purchase a car or scooter under the Motability Scheme.

Charities such as The Mobility Trust may also help.

You may be able to hire equipment from your local Red Cross, or use Shopmobility Scheme where you can hire a scooter for a shopping trip.
